Good News for Indian Students as Australia Opens Doors with Dual Degrees and Extra Work Opportunities

In a promising update for Indian students, Australia is offering more than just a classroom! The country is opening up new pathways through dual degrees, scholarships, and extended work options. All of this was announced during an education fair in Coimbatore on Friday.
The event, organized by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), brought together representatives from 19 universities. They interacted with Indian students and their parents, and told them more about studying and living in Australia.
NEP 2020 Encourages Indian Students to Pursue Higher Education in Australia
Mr. Vik Singh, who is the Trade and Investment Commissioner of Austrade, led the conversation with the press. He spoke about how India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has made it easier for Indian students to study abroad.
Under NEP 2020, students can now take part in dual-degree programs. These programs allow students to split their time between Indian and Australian universities. It’s a big opportunity for those who want both local and international experience.
Singh highlighted that nearly 1.3 lakh Indian students are already studying in Australia. This number is steadily going up every year. He said that the process for studying in Australia is student-friendly. “The documentation process is simple, and the students are provided guidance on the courses, working in Australia, and their rights through the website www.studyaustralia.gov.au,” he added.
Post-Study Work Opportunities in Australia
One major advantage is that students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week while studying. This helps them earn money and also build work experience.
After graduation, work rights range from two to six years, depending on the course. However, Indian students get a bonus. Thanks to the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, they can work an additional year after finishing their studies!
When it comes to cost, Singh assured that Australian universities are affordable. He said they are more cost-effective than many European institutions.
Scholarships are also available for students who are eligible. Students can apply for financial aid based on their academic performance.
The most popular courses among Indian students are technology, finance, business, and architecture. There is also a growing trend of students opting for newer fields like psychology and biotechnology.
The event in Coimbatore saw an enthusiastic response. More than 400 applications were received for the next academic intake!
Austrade officials also held discussions with local business leaders. Many entrepreneurs in Coimbatore showed interest in investing in sectors like Artificial Intelligence, green energy, and textiles in Australia. This shows that the India–Australia connection goes beyond education; it also covers business and innovation.
Festival of Australia
Another major highlight was the Festival of Australia. This multi-city showcase is all about celebrating Australian education, food, and beverages!
The festival helps students learn more about courses that suit their goals. Representatives from several universities guide students through suitable options that match their academic dreams and career plans.
Mr. Vik Singh mentioned that this festival builds more than just interest; it strengthens the connection between the two countries. “Australia and India’s educational ties have deepened over the years, fostering strong economic and cultural connections that continue to grow. The ‘Festival of Australia’ strengthens Australia’s presence in India and celebrates a shared commitment to cross-cultural appreciation and collaboration,” he said.
Mr. Vik Singh added that these ties are not just about paperwork; they’re about people, progress, and partnerships. The fair was more than just an event—it was an experience! Parents, students, and officials all came together to discuss, explore, and plan futures. This strong response in Coimbatore shows that Indian students are ready to step onto global platforms. Australia is clearly becoming a favorite destination, and it’s not just because of academics. The country offers a mix of practical exposure, post-study benefits, and financial support.
With more fairs planned in other cities, Austrade is making sure this opportunity reaches every corner of India. As more students take this path, the bond between India and Australia will only grow stronger.
