Aakash Purohit was one of the foremost cardiologists in the Indian city of Pune. He was so respected by the entire medical community that he inspired nothing but awe and admiration from everyone around him. People weren’t even jealous of him, as they held him in such high regard that they wished to be like him without necessarily wanting to replace him.
However, if you are a successful person, there is bound to be at least one person who is jealous of you. In this case, Dr Purohit’s biggest rival and the person who wanted to overthrow him and become the biggest name in the medical world was his own son, Avinash.
Dr Purohit had three children, and he raised all of them with a fierce, competitive spirit. He didn’t forget to teach them about healthy competition, though, and he always reminded his children that competition breeds jealousy, so you should only compete so far that jealousy doesn’t grab hold of you.
Unfortunately, these lessons flew over the head of young Avinash, who became jealous of nobody but his own father. He felt a sense of inferiority just by being referred to as Dr Aakash’s son, as he constantly felt enraged by the prospect of not having his own identity. He was a brilliant medical student and would himself become an orthopedic and set up his own practice in the same hospital where his father worked.
He went home to his wife every day and complained about the humiliation he felt when every new patient coming into his office would refer to him as “Dr Aakash’s son.” His wife advised him to stay calm and only focus on building his own practice, as that is probably what his father did too in his formative years.
He heeded her advice and continued to work hard. For a decade, he held a secret grudge against his father and continued working hard with the sole objective of gaining respect equivalent to his father in the medical community. By the time ten years had passed, the senior Dr Purohit had retired from medical practice. This left Avinash as the sole doctor carrying the Purohit surname, as his siblings didn’t work in the medical field.
One night, he attended a medical event hosted by the board of directors of the city’s top government hospital, intended to honor the doctors of the city. He was excited to see awards being handed out to many doctors, including some younger and less experienced than him. At this point, he was sure that he would get something, and his expectations were high.
When the ceremony was about to end, one last award was announced: The Lifetime Achievement Award. And to his shock, the award went to his now-retired father. Finally, he snapped. He burst out angrily in front of everyone, making a fool of himself in the process. “I’ve poured my blood, sweat, and tears into becoming the greatest doctor in town, and this is how I am being rewarded? By having to watch my aged dad win yet another award despite not practicing medicine anymore? Were all my years of service worth nothing?”
While the other doctors were in shock at his unprofessional and reckless behavior, only Dr Aaakash Purohit seemed to be smiling. He looked at his son and said, “I knew all along that you wanted to be the greatest doctor that ever was, ever since you were a young boy. It was very obvious that you felt a level of jealousy towards me from the moment you decided to be a doctor; anyone could tell. This is why I asked the medical community to withhold the award they were going to give you, as I knew that your reaction would tell me exactly what I wanted to know. If you simply accepted it and continued dedicating yourself to serving people, it’d have been fine, but no. You just had to prove why you entered this noble profession only to stroke your own ego.”
This opened Dr Avinash’s eyes, and he realised his shortcomings. He began focusing on his ego and jealousy, and very soon, he was no longer bothered by his father’s legacy and worked solely to help people live better lives.
