Something very funny and special happened in our small town yesterday. The people went to vote for a new mayor. Usually, a mayor is a man or a woman in a suit. But this time, the winner is a cat named Barnaby.
Barnaby is a large, orange cat. He is five years old. He likes to sleep in the sun and eat fish. His owner, Mrs. Higgins, put his name on the ballot as a joke. She did not think he would actually win.
"I just wanted to make people smile," Mrs. Higgins said. "But then, everyone started putting 'Vote for Barnaby' signs in their yards."
Barnaby ran against Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith is a rich businessman. During the campaign, Mr. Smith shouted a lot and made big promises. The people of Oaktown were tired of the noise. They liked Barnaby better. Barnaby does not shout. He is quiet, soft, and a very good listener.
"I voted for Barnaby because he is honest," said Tom, the local baker. "When I talk to him, he looks at me with big green eyes. He never interrupts. He makes me feel calm."
Barnaby won the election by 500 votes. There was a big celebration in the town square last night. Barnaby wore a small red tie for the photos. He did not give a speech. Instead, he sat on the podium and purred loudly. Then, he took a nap.
Mrs. Higgins says Mayor Barnaby has big plans. "His first job is to catch the mice in the town hall," she explained. "He also wants everyone to be kind to animals."
The people of Oaktown are very happy today. They believe their town will be a peaceful place with their new furry leader.
