How Medieval Knights Practiced Discipline Will Shock You!

Knights from the Middle Ages are renowned for their chivalry, bravery, discipline, and commitment to serving their roles as defenders. While not all knights were combatants, there were several of them who actively led troops or fought in battle. Regardless of whether or not they were soldiers, all of them practiced a strict code of discipline. Their way of enforcing discipline among themselves is pretty interesting, as evidenced by a historical record from the 14th century.

Apparently, a French knight from the 14th century whose name is speculated to have been ‘Raymond,’ had a very interesting disciplinarian approach that isn’t outdated in today’s time. Basically, his daily life was simple. He woke up, spent the very first waking moment of his day praying, and immediately began physical training after he finished praying.

His physical training lasted for an unspecified amount of time, although it is assumed that he worked out for around an hour. After his training had finished, he would take a shower and report to his objectives. Most of his day was spent working hard on various responsibilities, including overseeing military establishments, acting as a mitigator between the forces defending a castle and a castle lord who, in turn, reported to the king’s circle of command.

His day concluded with another prayer before he went to sleep. It is difficult to determine when he was relieved of his duties and when he went to sleep, but it is speculated that his sleep schedule was highly inconsistent. After all, there wasn’t a solidified workplace culture in those times, and in certain positions of high responsibility, there basically isn’t a very rigid work culture, as you could be called to work anytime.

It is believed that this knight was involved in defending a somewhat strategically important castle from potential British invaders. In those times, the French and British were constantly clashing to establish hegemony in Europe. The castle guarded by this knight is noted to have sworn allegiance to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V during the 16th century, so it definitely survived British incursions for a long time.

Regardless of the politics of the Middle and early modern periods, it is important to note that the way this knight enforced discipline can really help us learn how to inculcate these values within ourselves. If you have a routine in your life, just sticking to it consistently will transform you into a significantly more disciplined person. Consistency is regarded by many as one of the most fundamental building blocks of discipline, and that is exactly what we need to learn from this knight who lived nearly 700 years ago.
