Charlie was an experienced lawyer. He had spent years running a law business alongside his old friend George. George would soon pass away, and the reins of the business would be passed down to his son, Howard. For years, Charlie continued his partnership with Howard, similar to how he worked with his father.
Beneath the exterior of a highly intelligent, professional man lay an extremely egotistical and vain individual. Charlie was exactly that. He belonged to an older generation of law students, a generation that did not have access to as many amenities as today’s students have. He did all his research by himself, and he wrote his own papers; he fought legal battles left and right, and he built his esteemed career over decades.
This inflated his sense of self to an enormous extent, which his partner Howard often overlooked. His old man, George, was himself a struggling lawyer by the time Charlie partnered up with him. The fact that a senior lawyer couldn’t build a successful law practice without the help of a young law genius made Howard view Charlie as an insurmountable law behemoth.
His perception was challenged when Charlie’s significantly younger brother, James, announced to everyone that he had cleared the bar exam and was fit to be a lawyer. This announcement took everyone by surprise, as nobody knew that James was studying to become a lawyer. As it turns out, James had taken an online course, which was a bit unusual as online courses weren’t that popular at that time.
James wanted to work at the firm that his brother had built over all these years. Unfortunately for him, Howard, the man who generally oversaw the recruitment process of the business, constantly rejected his applications. Enraged at his constant failures, he complained to his elder brother, wanting to know what he lacked. Charlie then told his brother something that poor James never wanted to hear.
He said that James was a lecherous leech who did an online course just to claim the title of lawyer, which his brother acquired after years of hard work. He revealed that he vehemently disliked the fact that undeserving people like James can just take the ‘easy way out’ to become a lawyer and consider themselves equal to so-called ‘actual lawyers’ like Charlie.
This broke James’ heart, as he had always looked up to his brother and wanted to be like him. He would eventually prove himself to be a competent lawyer and get a job at a different law firm. Over the years, James worked with several clients ranging from loving family men to chemistry teachers to car wash owners. By the end of his career, he was known as the city’s most famous lawyer, having established a separate law practice that catered to the needs of the city’s poor.
This goes to prove that an online course isn’t exactly a shortcut, but it is also a valid way to gain skills. Charlie grew up in a different time and had to use the traditional way to become a successful lawyer, whereas James used a supposed ‘easy way out’ and still managed to become a lawyer as renowned as his older brother.
