Board exams in India are basically an educational festival. Granted, not everyone enjoys this festival, but it is still a very widespread event that many students dread. A 21-year-old man recently shared his board exam experience that reveals a shocking truth about exams in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
Our story begins when our main character was still a class 10th student 5 years ago. He studied hard for the exams, shortening his sleep hours and focusing all of his consciousness on his studies. He was mostly confident that he would score good marks, except that he had one doubt. He had been told that the bulk of the marks depend on the examiner’s temperament rather than the student’s own knowledge. Regardless, he didn’t let that bother him too much.
As usual, he went to his exam centre, took the exam, and returned home. This pattern continued for the first three exams. On the fourth exam, however, he noticed something very fishy. There was one particular invigilator who looked very different from the rest. This individual looked more like a student than a teacher, as he would, since he was one of the younger teachers. The centre didn’t have the same level of security that board exam centres usually have. By security, we mean that the centre felt less supervised.
You would think that some students would take advantage of the poor supervision and use this opportunity to cheat. Most students, though, were too scared to cheat or even look at another person without feeling anxious. Keep in mind that the centre was in a tier-3 city, so it was kind of expected to be relatively under-equipped. Back to the suspicious invigilator, it was soon discovered that he was a sports teacher, and he seemed to be a little acquainted with some of the students who had come to the centre to take their exams.
When our main character was leaving his exam centre nearly 15 minutes after his exams ended, he noticed that one room still had its lights on. This was unusual, so he crept closely and saw something that shook him. The young invigilator was alone in the room with a student who was still writing his exam. But instead of taking extra time to finish his exam, the student was given another answer sheet by the invigilator to copy the sheet word-for-word.
The students were too afraid to cheat in this exam, but an invigilator was actively helping students cheat. Eventually, this news spread and the teacher was caught and fired from his job. As it turns out, the student who was getting unethical help from the invigilator was a relative of his, a second cousin, more precisely.
As you can see, these kinds of events happen often, but are mostly swept under the rug. It was only by coincidence that this teacher was caught, as many others could have done the same without being noticed.
