The Mountain of Books

The Mountain of Books

Maya stared at her math textbook. To her, the numbers looked like a messy soup. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The final exam was tomorrow, and she felt like she knew nothing.

"I give up," she whispered, pushing the heavy book away.

Her friend, Leo, looked up from his own notes. "What’s wrong?"

"I can’t do this," Maya said, her voice shaking. "Everyone else understands it instantly, but I don’t. I’m going to fail."

Leo moved his chair closer. "You aren't going to fail. Remember when I couldn't write that history essay last month? You told me to break it into small pieces. Let’s do that with this."

They spent the next three hours working. They didn't try to learn the whole book at once. They solved one problem, then another. When Maya got stuck, Leo didn't give her the answer; he helped her find the path. Slowly, the knot of fear in Maya's stomach began to untie.

The next morning, the exam paper landed on her desk. The room was silent. Maya felt nervous, but she remembered the night before. One step at a time, she thought. She picked up her pen.

A week later, the teacher handed back the results. Maya didn't get a perfect score. She got a 'B'. But when she saw the red grade on the paper, she didn't feel sad. She felt proud.

She realized that her academic journey wasn't about being perfect. It was about not giving up when the mountain looked too high to climb. She smiled at Leo across the room. She was ready for the next challenge.
