Guide For SUSS Singaporean Students

It is 11:38 PM. I’m in SUSS’s library, two coffees down, looking at my timetable like it’s a difficult crossword.

Next to one of my modules, bolded, is “F2F PT.” My first thought is "Part Time, In-Person??" Fitness to fitness?? Free to fail??? I mean, why exactly do we need an F2F PT class guide for SUSS Singaporean students?

I think someone who picked that acronym would do us all a favor by explaining their choice.

After 20 minutes of pretending I was aware of what was going on, I decided to do what responsible students do: I texted three of my group mates. One responded with a shrug emoji, one replied with a meme of someone sinking, and the last said, “Oh, that’s Face-to-Face Part-Time Class lAH.”

If you're a student at SUSS, and like me, you're also sitting in front of your computer feeling confused at the very least and excessively caffeinated, let’s flesh that out properly.

What Exactly is F2F PT Class

F2F PT is an abbreviation for Face-to-Face Part-Time Course.

Essentially, SUSS (Singapore University of Social Sciences) employs a flexible pedagogical framework that involves:

  • E-learning (self-directed learning using pre-recorded material sometimes),
  • Electronic Tasks,
  • Seminars, and
  • Face-to-Face Schools – which is where F2F PT comes in.

F2F PT Sessions are:

In-person meetings that take place on campus.

Almost always in the evenings or on the weekends (because almost all part-time learners are working in the daytime).

Incorporated for more interactive activities − discussions, group presentations, case studies, peer support, and sometimes grueling revision.

Ahem, then, it is not a mysterious military engagement: it is simply a real-time class you are familiar with, subject to your generally busy world.

How it Actually Looks in Real Life

My first in-person tutorial was for the Business Communication class. Here's how it went:

  • I rushed over from my internship, barely made it to Clementi, scarfed down a sandwich from 7-Eleven, and walked into the classroom just as the lecturer clicked "Start." Everyone looked a little tired but strangely engaged, probably because, unlike online, you can't just turn off your camera and check out.
  • The instructor set us to work in groups straight away. Within the first 15 minutes, I met three new classmates (one was surprisingly great at organizing group presentations). We talked about a case analysis related to ethics in professional life. I actually spoke my mind... which is atypical of me online.
  • And by the end of the 3-hour session, I felt exhausted, but strangely satisfied. "OK, I learned something today as opposed to just watching a video at 1.5x speed."

Why F2F PT Class Matters

I get it; some of us are comfortable paced in hoodies, hustling in front of screens without the obligation of chit chat. However, in-person PT classes do, in fact, have some distinct advantages: Improved Focus?. There is something special about being there - no TikTok notifications or bed calling you. You simply focus. ?

Authentic Connection?Online collaborative work is awkward. "Can you hear me?" "You're faded out." "Sorry, my wi-fi is down." It's much easier to communicate in an in-person format. Resolve Questions Cultured?In person, the instructor typically elaborates on concepts more than online, and if something is unclear, you can ask afterwards.

Balancing Classes with Real Life

The truth is that many SUSS students are juggling multiple commitments. That could be work, family, internships, socializing (if you are that lucky), and then there is the factor of attending personal training in person.

For me, the first few weeks felt like I was playing Tetris. My schedule was full. I started doing a few things to create more equilibrium in my life:

  • Block some time in your calendar for transportation! Traffic in Singapore is unpredictable, especially in the evenings during rush hour.
  • Bring along a snack (or two), trust me, a post-3-hour evening class is not enjoyable when your stomach is rumbling.
  • Make the best use of your class time. If your professor gives any pointers about an assignment during the course, write them down. I did not once, and ended up reviewing the recordings for hours.
  • Also, here is a sneak-peak suggestion: if work builds up and it seems like something is too much, do not be shy to use assignment help Singapore. Sometimes you just need someone to support you while you wrap your head around your next F2F.

Common Misconceptions

I’ve heard several myths floating around campus, so here’s the clarification:

  • “F2F PT Classes Are Not Required.”

Not exactly. Many modules use attendance or participation as a part of your grade. And, come on, you actually miss the experience of working with the group if you skip out.

  • “It’s Just Like Virtual Lectures, But In Person.”

No way. F2F sessions are usually designed for engagement, not passive listening. Think presentations, discussions, and peer review.

Good luck with that. Conversation and clarification are a part of in-person sessions and may not be a part of the notes.

How These Classes Affect Your Assignment

The clever part of face-to-face sessions is that these sessions often help shape your assignments. In my Social Research module, the instructor introduced a brief case study during the face-to-face session, asked us to work collaboratively in groups to generate potential research questions, and then, unexpectedly, that same case study became our assessed assignment.

If you happen to fall asleep during that session, you will be scrambling to keep up later. You will find your little hacks. You will work out which modules require some interaction and which require more passive engagement. You will even work out how to complete your online work and attend in-person part-time meetings.
