King Christ University recently came under fire for apparently laying off a veteran professor for speaking up against a supposed act of ‘academic injustice.’ Dr Francis Fisher, a distinguished biology professor, invited the wrath of the university by voicing his opinion on a controversial subject, but was it really contentious?
The story begins with Dr Fisher assigning a new project to his students. The project was heavily research-oriented, plus the deadline was not relaxed enough. Many students often criticised professors for giving them assignments with tight deadlines without knowing that generally, a single professor doesn’t decide the date of submission.
The students were working on their assignments, and Dr Fisher was teaching in the meantime. It was all proceeding normally until the date of submission arrived. It was at that moment that he realised something fishy about most assignments. They were all written in a similar format, and some of the assignments even had similar wording and language. Dr Fisher was not the youngest person in the university’s faculty, but he was up to date with the latest technology, and he could tell that these assignments were AI-generated.
This made Dr Fisher very upset, as he believed that biology is a fundamental study of living beings and their bodies. Thus, taking the unethical way to churn out a mindless assignment for such a sensitive subject seemed very wrong to him. He gave another lecture, during which he angrily scolded the class for their academic dishonesty. This news quickly spread like wildfire, and soon Dr Fisher was summoned before the board of directors.
The board wasn’t too happy about him angrily screaming at young students, and they demanded that he explain himself. He passionately argued against the ethical implications of students using AI to write their assignments. While the board did understand some of his arguments, they were still not very pleased with him. They stated that his conduct in the class was unprofessional and unbecoming of an esteemed professor.
However, Dr Fisher totally understood that he was in the wrong for what he did, but what the board said next shocked him. They also stated that AI is just another tool, and it is foolish to expect that students won’t use it. This absolutely infuriated Dr Fisher, and he tried his hardest not to scream at the board members. As the board members continued listing the reasons why students should take advantage of tools like AI, the professor gradually began losing his ability to tolerate their nonsense any longer.
He finally snapped and shouted angrily at the committee members. He called them “a disgrace to the academic community,” and that they should be ashamed of themselves. Naturally, this behaviour was not taken very lightly, and Dr Fisher was fired with immediate effect. This incident made its way to the news, and Dr Fisher gave several interviews to media houses in which he called out King Christ University for fostering a culture of academic dishonesty without thinking about the consequences it could potentially have on the future of the human race. Many in the academic world agreed with him, but many also criticised him for behaving unprofessionally and talking behind the backs of his former colleagues.
So what do you think? Was Dr Fisher justified in his outburst, or was the university taking a precautionary approach by firing a teacher who proved twice in a row that he wasn’t the most professional individual in the world?
