Course Overview

Every day, we make thousands of decisions. Should I wait for the approaching truck to pass or cross the road right away? For lunch, should I have a salad or fries? For a taxi driver, how much should I tip them? Typically, we make these choices almost instinctively, relying on what psychologists refer to as "heuristics"—basic guidelines that help us get by in life. The sheer number of options we face every day would paralyse us if we didn't have these mental shortcuts. However, under some conditions, these shortcuts result in foreseeable mistakes—that is if we know what to look out for.

For instance, did you know that we have an innate tendency to sell investments that are performing well for us while sticking to those that are not? Or that we frequently choose less-than-ideal insurance payment schedules and buy insurance policies we don't actually need? And why, despite the company's promise to match our payments, do so many of us choose not to sign up for our employers' corporate retirement plans?

These and numerous other financial decision-making mistakes can be prevented if we are aware of the biases that lead to them. This is the subject of behavioural finance. We study these foreseeable mistakes in this course and find out where we are most vulnerable to them. The goal of this course is to help participants make wiser financial decisions. Learn how to make better long-term financial decisions around your spending, saving, and investing.
